FLIGHT DETAILS:
Saturday November 23rd – Airplanes will depart from their home base, and will all meet at the Tampico International Airport (MMTM) to clear Mexican customs & immigration at around 10:00am CST. We will also process our initial AFAC AIU Permit. Bring a light snack, this step will take anywhere between 1-2 hours. After we all obtain our permits, we will continue on a domestic leg from Tampico International to Guanajuato International.
Airport Details:
Tampico International
Identifier: MMTM
Elevation: 82 ft
Longest Runway: 8,366 x 148ft
Guanajuato International
Identifier: MMLO
Elevation: 5,956 ft
Longest Runway: 11,486 x 148ft
VFR route // 689 NM long. If you’re departing from the Austin-area, you can fly directly southbound to Tampico. This first leg can be flown as low as 3,500 feet. If fuel endurance is an issue, you can also choose to depart the US from Brownsville, TX. Our second leg is 256 miles long, about two hours long in the typical GA aircraft. Climbing to 10,500 or higher is recommended, but most terrain is as high as 6,000 and can be flown at 8,500 with strategic VFR planning.
IFR Route // 464 NM long. Plan to fly IFR from Brownsville, TX (KBRO), with a stop in Tampico. The first leg can be flown at 9 or 10K altitude to stay on the MEA. The second leg from Tampico to Guanajuato has a challenging leg from the TMN vor to the QET vor where you must climb between 13 to 14K to remain IFR. If weather permits (and I am sure it will), I would fly the second leg VFR at around 9.5 or 10.5K.
After Landing in Guanajuato:
After landing at our final destination, we will walk to the commercial terminal and get ground transportation to the colonial city of Guanajuato. The trip is about 35 minutes long.
Planned activities:
Sunday Nov 24th (am): Day-long excursion to the city of San Miguel de Allende.
In San Miguel de Allende, you’ll have the chance to explore its iconic landmarks like the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel and wander through its charming artisan markets. For a creative touch, visit local galleries or take part in a hands-on art or cooking class to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the city.
Monday Nov 25th: Explore the City of Guanajuato.
Begin your day at the heart of Guanajuato, the lively town square, Jardín de la Unión, surrounded by historic buildings and charming cafés. From there, venture into the city’s narrow streets and visit the famous Callejón del Beso, known for its romantic legend. Don’t miss the opportunity to tour the intriguing Museo de las Momias, home to the famous mummies of Guanajuato, a unique and eerie cultural experience that offers a glimpse into the city’s past.
Tuesday Nov 26th: Last day to visit town. Recommended that you fly direct from Guanajuato to Brownsville, TX, a 369 NM trip nonstop.
